The New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors, Inc. (NYSAPLS) attended the New York State School Counselors Association (NYSSCA) conference in Syracuse on November 17 and 18. NYSAPLS members, Thomas E. Cerchiara Jr., and Stephen R. Miller, professional land surveyors, explained the current demand for entry level survey technicians in New York State and encouraged school counselors to consider land surveying as a career path for middle and high school students.

The surveyors displayed current and emerging technology in the surveying field including robotic total stations and aerial drones for mapping. The counselors were made aware of the technical, legal and historical aspects of land surveying in the state and offered that the field held many opportunities for students interested in working outdoors, determining property boundaries, analyzing mathematical data and developing maps using computers.

The school counselors were encouraged by NYSAPLS’s offer to make presentations to students in local schools describing the benefits of land surveying as a career choice.

NYSAPLS, together with its regional affiliates, represents over 75% of licensed land surveyors and survey technicians in New York State. See more at
