Retreat Maps Organization's Plan for Next 3 Years

During November 9-10, 2017, NYSAPLS held a Strategic Planning Retreat to "map" the organization's plans and priorities for the next three years (2018-2020).


The retreat hosted 38 attendees including a variety of current directors, new members, young professionals, seasoned "veteran" members, officers, trustees and staff. The two-day event was facilitated by Kate Cox of the New York Council of Non-Profits.



Thursday's activities began with an icebreaker luncheon to allow everyone to get to know each other. Prior to the event, attendees were asked to send in their favorite picture of themselves and/or their family, along with "3 Things We Don't Know About You". A slideshow was created from the pictures and displayed during the luncheon.

After introductions, the facilitator reviewed the results of the polls that were sent to our board of directors and members. Thursday afternoon continued with a SWOT analysis, and review of our mission, values and vision for the future.


On Friday, the group identified the key strategic issues and goals they would like to focus on, including:

1 - Communications and Member Engagement

2 - Legislative Issues and Representation

3 - Programs

4 - State of the Profession

5 - Board and Leadership Development


Members were then broken into groups and rotated through each of the five focus areas to discuss and explore each topic in detail. From there, they spent the afternoon piecing together an action plan and discussing our next steps and the strategic plan's timeline.


Ms. Cox will put the first draft of the plan together for the group's review in the next few weeks. The plan will also be shared with the NYSAPLS Board of Directors for their input and adoption early next year.


As with our last Strategic Plan (2015-2017,) we will set-up a members-only web page so you can view the plan, review the poll data and follow along with our progress. (Once the page is live, we will send our members a link and more details.)


On behalf of the Strategic Planning Committee, thank you to all of our members who completed our polls. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and will help blaze the path for the next 3 years.


We encourage you to stay involved, ask questions and participate as much as possible. We are still looking for committee members to serve in 2018.
