Legislature Back in Session This Week

The Legislature is back in session this week; their time in session will not be limited to COVID-related legislation or police reform legislation as it has been when they have returned in the past few months. Instead, the legislature is taking up priority bills that might normally see movement at the end of the typical legislative session.

Among those bills is the design profession continuing education bill. This bill was initially being pushed because the profession of geology has been without a continuing education requirement; after review and consideration by the State Education Department, it was determined that this might be a good opportunity to address any necessary updates to the continuing education requirements for the engineering and land surveying professions as well. The result was A.10021-a (Englebright)/S.7986-a (Stavisky), which moves the CE requirements for land surveyors, engineers, and geologists under one section of law and eliminates the existing restriction on educational activity format; it also allows for 6 hours of continuing education to carry over to a subsequent triennium registration period and removes the sunset date.

The bill is effective January 1, 2022, which gives the State Education Department time to update guidelines and regulations as needed. The bill passed the Assembly today and has moved through the Senate Higher Education Committee. The legislature is scheduled to be in session through Thursday and we anticipate the CE bill will pass the Senate before they adjourn.
