Understanding Subsurface Utility Locating

NY LS/PE CE: 1.0

This course is designed to provide the attendee an understanding of how buried utility systems are located, and that information presented to end users such as the facility owner, engineers, planners, architects and excavators. This course includes the following:
• An introduction to subsurface utility location and its benefits
• Private versus public utility systems
• How data is presented using “CI/ASCE 38-02, Standard Guidelines for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data”
• The means methods used to find buried utility structures including; electromagnetic, magnetic, ground penetrating radar and specialized systems
• Vacuum excavation for test holes
• Best practices


About our Speaker

Morgan Abele has been an active member of the surveying and subsurface utility location industry for over 34 years. Currently, he serves as SUL Director, for Control Point Associates, Inc. He is a founding member of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) and serves on numerous national, state and local industry committees. He specializes in utility infrastructure mapping and assessment, subsurface utility investigation, and critical infrastructure assessment projects.
