The Future of State Plane Coordinate System

1.0 NY LS/PE CE Hour

The State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS) is being redefined as part of the transition from the North American Datum of 1983 to the Terrestrial Reference Frames of 2022. The presentation discusses proposed SPCS2022 policy and procedures, including technical characteristics and requirements; default designs (created by NGS in the absence of stakeholder input); "layered" zones (a single statewide zone plus a system of sub-zones); "special purpose" zones (providing coverage for areas that straddle two or more zones); and who, what, when, and how input used for defining SPCS2022 can be provided to NGS.

Seminar Goals and Objectives

  1. Explain how the zone development process works.
  2. Distinguish the difference between old and new designs.
  3. Explain how and the importance of providing feedback to NGS.
