2015-2017 Strategic Plan Coming to a Close

In the fall of 2014, NYSAPLS engaged the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) to facilitate a strategic plan for our organization.  The Executive Board worked with NYCON to develop a planning process that included an online survey of members and a more extensive survey of the Board of Directors. Early in 2015, the NYSAPLS Board of Directors adopted a 3-year strategic plan (2015-2017) that embodies the core focus of our organization, as directed by the membership.

After the 2015-2017 plan was adopted, one key factor was identified to measure the success of the plan: accountability. With the assistance of our strategic facilitator, Susan Weinrich of NYCON, a calendar of tasks was created and assigned to the board of directors and each standing committee. The tasks were transferred to each of the board and committee’s meeting agendas to keep the association’s priorities in the forefront of all business. Quarterly reports were created and posted routinely online and shared with NYSAPLS Members.

 

Three years later, it is time to evaluate the plan’s success and begin our next multi-year strategic plan for 2018-2020. The next strategic retreat is planned for November 9-11, 2017 at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs, NY.

 

The NYSAPLS Strategic Planning Committee has been working alongside HQ staff and our NYCON facilitator to prepare for the upcoming event. In their latest posting to the strategic calendar (found here - member access only), the committee identified tasks they would like to revisit or rollover to the next strategic plan. They also identified items they would not recommend to repeat, as they were not as successful as originally intended.

 

In addition, two polls have been created. One poll will be sent to the entire membership. Another poll will be required for the board of directors complete. Please watch for the polls which will be sent this week. We strongly encourage you to participate in this brief exercise to ensure our members are being heard.

 

In addition to reviewing the previous plan’s accomplishments and various member poll results, the event attendees will work directly with our facilitator to craft a new SWOT analysis and formulate the new 3-year plan. Overall the committee is planning several group activities to promote an energetic, creative and fun experience for all!
