About the workshop:

Technology is wonderful. Our new surveying instruments are so automated, that our traditional field personnel only function as "minders," right? Wrong!  Join Joseph V.R. Paiva as he exposes you to the design concepts of the surveying technologies, their weaknesses and their advantages. The course will cover proper ways to take advantage of the strengths and to minimize the impact of the weakness. A lot of this is accomplished simply by being a more educated user, and communicating this to all those you have under your direct supervision. Some of the coverage of the material in this course will be by means of demonstrations and hands-on exercises. The general outcome is to have a better user by being a more knowledgeable user.

 

In this course we will discuss the concepts of how each of these technologies work. We will discuss the benefits in time, accuracy, portability, etc. But we will also talk about the problems that can be created in the data that is being collected, that may not be easily detected in the field or in the office. We will talk about the methods and office methods that can be used to discover such problems.  The emphasis will be on how to make sure your equipment users understand what is really happening. This requires some understanding of the technology, but it also requires paying a lot more attention. It is paradoxical, but coming home consistently with good data actually requires a more educated user than a less educated one ... for many reasons. Many of these concepts will be demonstrated with selected instrumentation by showing how lack of adjustment can be monitored and with actual hands-on exercises to show how potential for error due to lack of adjustment can be detected.

 

Prerequisites or Equipment needed:

 

For the hands-on session, the class will break up into groups of three. It is highly recommended that each of the attendees bring one or more of the following equipment for use in the hands-on session; Total station, level, level rod tripod, prism, optical or laser plummet tribrach and prism/antenna pole with bipod/tripod. Additional equipment includes adapters to place the prism on pole or tribrach. A field book is strongly recommended.

 

About Our Speaker: Joseph V.R. Paiva

Joseph V.R. Paiva is principal and CEO of GeoLearn LLC, which is an online provider of professional and technical education since February 2014. Dr. Paiva also continues to serve as a consultant in the field of geomatics and general business, particularly to international developers, manufacturers and distributors of instrumentation and other geomatics tools. His special areas of interest include interface development and design for software and hardware, errors analysis and survey instrumentation of all types. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, Registered Land Surveyor, was a NSPS representative to ABET, serving as a program evaluator and is retired as team chair on accreditation visits to surveying programs, and has more than 30 years' experience working in civil engineering, surveying and mapping.

Payment must be made in full upon registration. Purchase orders not accepted. Registrations cancelled 30 days or earlier will receive a full refund less a 10% processing fee. Cancellations 10-29 days prior will receive a 50% refund. Cancellations 0-9 days prior to the event will not receive a refund. Receipts will be provided at time of registration if requested. Schedules, presenters and programs subject to change without notice. Refunds will not be given due to inclement weather.
